On the weekend of an international strike called by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, residents of the Upper Cape will stage demonstrations to raise awareness about the local impacts of climate disruption.
On Friday, September 20, local participants in Thunberg’s “Fridays For Future” strike will take part in a die-in at Falmouth Village Green. At precisely 11 AM, while bells ring from the nearby St. Barnabas Church and Falmouth Congregational Church, demonstrators wearing life preservers will signal that it’s the “11th hour” to take climate action.
Demonstrators call on state and local representatives to include net zero carbon emissions and climate adaptation in future planning, including the Cape Cod Commission’s 2020 Regional Policy Plan. The Falmouth demonstrations, organized by Engage Falmouth, 350 Cape Cod, the Coalition for Social Justice, Move to Remove, and the Upper Cape Cod Women’s Coalition, will coincide with similar events taking place in Sandwich, Truro, Barnstable and Dennis, and in churches across the Cape.
