Why do you want to run for this office?

I have always been interested in education and education that continues beyond formal schooling. The Library is the one community place that makes that possible. I have worked mostly in Boston at Boston University for the past 29 years that I have lived in Falmouth. Now I want to do more than before for the place that became, after fifty years of living around the world being an 'army brat' and then a naval officer, my home town. I have served previously on the Cable Advisory Committee, the FCTV Board, the first Charter Review Committee, and on the second Charter Review Committee as Chair. I have also given ten Joy of Learning lecture series and am scheduled to do more. With these experiences I have developed a desire to do more for Falmouth and this position as Trustee will allow me a deeper and more continuing involvement.than before.

What qualifications do you have for this position?

I have appropriate education credentials; A BS in Naval Engineering (US Naval Academy), a Master of Public Administration (University of Washington) and a PhD in Political Science (Boston University). In addition I have been a teacher at six college level institutions, three while on active duty in the Navy. Of course I always worked closely with libraries at these institutions and even helped set up and maintain shipboard librarians and assisted withe library at the NATO Base in Keflavik, Iceland. As Director of Undergraduate Studies for fifteen years at the Department of International Relations at BU I was responsible for making sure all 800 or so of our students knew how to use the Mugar Library and all its resources most effectively. And I love books. My own library is over 1500 items.

What issues would you plan to address if elected? How would you do this?

The main issue on which I would concentrate is ensuring the appreciation of the strengths and wseakensses of library assets and services in conjunction with the many online sources now available. It is important that those seeking information or entertainment from reading and lectures know how to evaluate the benefits and sometimes shortcomings of the various sources that are available. A trained library staff, like the one we already have, is essential to such a project. Of course there are already many good ideas on along these lines but I would emphasize and even hope, to the extent practicable, to develop ways to publicize and promote the abilities our Library has to do all this.

What is your favorite place or activity in Falmouth?

The Library is my favorite place in Falmouth since it is the one place in Town that serves everyone in Falmouth; whatever age, young and old, whatever interest whether it is learning, relaxing, meeting with others with similar interests, groups, going to lectures, and so much more..Falmouth has much to offer in the way of enjoying nature, good dining, sports opportunities, and just about something for everyone. But the Library really is the one place in Falmouth for everyone.
